I mean think about it this way some events in the prologue will have some tribal warriors who might join because they wish to travel. I think there should be some morale penalty, or some other force that prevent you from simply firing everyone in one go. A bigger caravan implies a stronger force, work put in, a later game player, and through unlocks, skill, advancement, you are able to obtain the profitability that can sustain such a large force. One of the objectives in the game should be to grow your commitatus. Once you learn that you can save on food/upkeep cost just by terfing everyone in one city, it becomes pretty easy to save a lot of coin, staff down, and then explore with minimum food/upkeep penalty. That's only if you play it a certain way. The game is said to be hardcore and have frequent death spirals. First thing is that it's far to easy to fire everyone in your caravan.
